About: Mankato, MN
Mankato is located in southern Minnesota at a large bend of the Minnesota River, where it meets the Blue Earth River. When people began migrating from the east coast into the Midwest, several residents, including Parsons King Johnson, stopped in present-day Mankato in 1852. According to Chief Sleepy Eye, the site was ideal for a town because it was safe from flooding but good for river traffic. In the TV series "Little House on the Prairie," the characters would go shopping in "the big town," which referred to the city of Mankato.
